About Me

My name is Amanda Light and I grew up locally just outside of Charlottesville in Orange County. I would definitely say it’s a small, quite place. I have just moved back to Gordonsville after being gone for eleven years. I have one younger brother who now lives in Reston, VA and my parents live in the same place I left them in Gordonsville.

I am married and have two boys, Jack (7-years-old) and Jordan (3-years-old).  My husband, Cameron, is in the Navy and is currently assigned to a ship in Norfolk.  He is deployed a lot so my family has offered to help me with my boys while he is away and I am in school.

I lived in Spain for the seven years before moving home, which is the longest place I have lived since being married. My oldest son Jack was born just before moving to Spain and my younger son Jordan was born on September 11, 2001 in the military hospital there in Spain. I like to tell people that something good did happen on that day just so they don’t feel like the world is totally evil. I really enjoyed living in Spain. The culture is very different than here and we lived near the ocean so we could go to the beach anytime we wanted. When I arrived in Spain I didn’t know any Spanish and it took me a while to get comfortable with the language and I really only know broken Spanish now. My older son can flip back and forth between the two languages. When we arrived back in the states my youngest didn’t speak any English but understood it quite well. I worked in the hospital there on base doing medical transcription for the whole hospital. I really enjoyed it because it gave me a chance to learn about all the different specialties.

I am currently enrolled part-time at Piedmont Virginia Community College pursuing an Associates degree in Nursing.  I am very excited and have applied for the Fall 2005 semester to start that program.  I should find out soon if I was accepted.  Keep your fingers crossed.

My Job

I am currently employed through UVA in the Department of Neurosurgery. I do medical transcription for Edward R. Laws, MD. He specializes in pituitary tumors and skull base tumors and is world renowned for the type of approach he has perfected, which is through the nose.  The pituitary tumors that he treats causes nasty disease.  One of those disease is Acromegaly or commonly known as Gigantism.  The other is Cushing's disease which is caused by an excess of the infamous cortisol steroid that everyone hears about with their weight loss.  The link below will take you to our website inside the hospital to fill you in on other aspects of our program.

My Interests

I like to read and watch movies.  I also really like working in the garden.  I love fresh cut flowers.  Unfortunately, I can't really enjoy to many of my hobbies right now because I am very busy with work, school and my family.  I do plan to go to Marrakesh Morocco this June on a work related trip.  I am very excited and have not been there before.  I will be working at a convention held by the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.  My boss is the president of this organization and he has invited the whole office to attend and take part in the week long festivities.
